AN INTERESTING ROLE REVERSAL Tags: Family God’s Faithfulness Marriage

role reversal

We decided to mix it up a bit and do something different. At 8:30 AM Dan drove himself (I was along) to the emergency room. Surprise! He needed an emergency appendectomy. He had had pain since Thursday but waited until Friday night to mention it to anyone. Saturday morning he got up calmly and said he was going to the emergency room.

Usually I’m the one with the medical problem. And I’m not one to be quiet about it. I usually do it rather splashily like needing an ambulance at 4 AM.

I’m not a good patient – scared of  needles, scared of everything actually.

Dan on the other hand is very stoic, calm, collected with a no problem attitude.

Which leads us to the role reversal. He is usually beside me explaining procedures to me and reassuring me that everything will be all right.

If you’ve spent anytime at all in a hospital you know everything moves in slow motion. This can be very frustrating to a type A personality with a strong organizational gene. I sat beside him feeling totally useless. My fierce need to get this emergency room organized so we can get his surgery done and get out of there gnawed away inside of me.

I learned that Dan has spent endless hours patiently sitting with me or waiting for me in hospitals. As a patient the time frame is so distorted, but as the one waiting it seems endless.

Dan learned that healing doesn’t come as quickly as one would like. I know there were times after surgeries or procedures that he has just “wanted me to be well”.

It was good for both of us to experience the other side of things. We both decided we don’t like either side and would prefer that both of us would just be well.

We know that isn’t going to happen, but we also know who holds our future in the palm of His hand.

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” 2Co 4:16

It’s been awhile. I unintentionally took some time off. As you know now, I took care of my sick husband for awhile and before that the holidays just seemed to take over. We had great fun and it was really good for me to take a break, even if it was unplanned. I hope to be back with weekly posts now.
